Why recycle beverage containers? There are many reasons to recycle beverage containers in California. First and foremost, the average California household will receive anywhere from $100 to $200 a year by recycling all of their beverage containers.
Recycling beverage containers also has a substantial environmental impact. For every bottle recycled, fewer virgin resources need to be mined, and less methane (a potent greenhouse gas) is released from landfills. In California, by recycling beverage containers alone, we are preventing the emission of more than 300,000 tons of greenhouse gases annually.
Finally, because beverage containers and other single-use containers are often consumed away from home, they are a major source of litter, and often make their way into waterways and eventually the ocean. So by recycling beverage containers, we prevent a huge amount of damage to oceans and marine life.
Why don’t I have a recycle bin? Lincoln recycles with the One Big Bin recycling program. Your garbage and recyclables go into the same can and are taken to the Western Placer Waste Management Authority’s (WPWMA) Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where the recyclables are separated from the garbage. This reduces the quantity of garbage that is put into the landfill.
Why is recycling different everywhere? Under US law, recycling programs have to be run at the state and local level, so there is no national standard. What can and cannot be recycled — and how you recycle — can vary even between adjoining towns and cities. This is due to what hauling services and sorting facilities are used, and the economics of transporting and selling recyclable materials into the marketplace.

Unpleasant odors come from my green waste container. What can I do? To reduce odors from green waste containers, leave the lid open, even when it is empty (on non-rainy days only). You can also try to mow your lawn later in the day when the grass does not have as much moisture. You should also rinse out your containers periodically to remove built-up debris.
